Peer Supporters have personal experience with disabilities, and work with others alone and in small groups to seek solutions for independence. This core service is linked to the belief that people with disabilities are the experts about their needs.
Peer Supporters promote the self-determination and personal responsibility inherent
in self directed goal setting and achievement.
Peer Supporters Can…
- Listen
- Share firsthand knowledge about living with a disability
- Assist others in making informed, independent choices
- Share experiences, information, and strategies
- Lead a discussion about navigating attitudes and values that impede personal growth
- Offer solutions to barriers, obstacles, and problems
The DAC also offers three peer support programs called P.I.E (Peer Support. Indepedence. Empowerment).
- One-on-one peer support
- Peer support groups
- Online peer support programs.
Online and live peer support groups are held the last Thursday in the month from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 pm. Peer support groups are held in both Midlands and Upstate DAC offices. Click here to view our Peer Support Group Flyer.
